Another anecdote I can add, is from a panel session at an EDA confference in SF back in 1998. I was working for a little known EDA company called InterHDL at the time, and the session was "CLI against GUI" in software development toolchains, and more specificly EDA (though there's not MUCH of a difference). EDA is one market MS could not figure out why they were not able to conquer. The panel was made up of people from Synopsis and such big names of the industry, and one guy from MS who was trying to defend his paradigm. "working with pipes and redirections is just too limited!" was the moto, but I doubt even one person in the audience fealt his solutions were any better. One of them got up and gave the winning argument: "pipes are the natural way things work, and you can't just ignore mother nature! Just look at me, I am too made of inputs, pipes and outputs!" ans with that he theatricly pointed at his mouth, stomach and finally back side respectively. From that point things went spiraling down even worse for the MS guy. (I later found out that the audience guy was the sysadmin for a nice little 12 employee company called VA Research. Remembr them?) One more anecdote about that session, since the panel was titled "OS Shootout" between NT and Linux, the organizers prepared a heap of T shirts to give away to the audience, one was printed "NT Rules" and the other "Linux Rules". they were also realistic enough to print 4-5 times as man of Linux ones, which were of course completely out by the end, though quite a few NT shirts were left IIRC :) but it's nice that MS are coming to their senses. I'm all for cooperation and opening standards afterall. the next step is common binary format with the soon-to-be-marketed Mac-OS for Intel, we live in interesting times... -- Reluctant sex symbol Ira Abramov http://ira.abramov.org/email/ ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
