I checked and all the icon types listed (including printer) are selected. In 
fact, just to make sure the tab works correctly, I unselected the DVD icons 
and, as expected, my DVD burner and reader disappeared. Re-selecting them 
caused them to return to the desktop.

BTW - is it possible that there's some connection to the fact that this is a 
USB printer? Although, if I answer my own question, I can say that my USB 
scanner does appear on the desktop.
