I'm answering my own post :-).

While playing around with mtink (BTW - a great utility for Epson printers), I 
discovered that the "check nozzle" button printed bad output too. So I ran 
"clean nozzle" a couple of times and now print output is excellent. I can 
only guess that the initial ink charging routine (a hardware button on the 
printer) didn't work properly. I hope (but don't know for sure) that this was 
also responsible for the printer stopping several times. In any case, it 
hasn't happend since I cleaned the nozzles.
