Don't forget the G3 laptops. I have a 5 year old pismo (I'm at least the third owner) with a 400 mHz G3 (still respectable these days), 512m ram, and until yesterday a built in wifi card. I blew the card socket, so I'm using an Orinoco card clone now. I'm only running MacOs on it now, as it runs the apps I want, and still gives me a command line, ssh and X windows into my Linux and solaris servers. In fact I'm writing this now using MUTT running on a linux machine, with a Mac as my front end. I consider MacOs a decent combination of free and commercial software, the underlying OS is an open source BSD variant, with a proprietary GUI and application library. However since it is BSD based, many open source apps run on it quite nicely. Yellowdog and Ubuntu linux work well with Mac laptops and desktops. (not to get into a distro war, but Ubuntu is a minimal distro while Yellowdog is a big one). Orinoco wireless card clones are cheap, and work well with linux laptops (Open source driver) on both Intel and Mac laptops. The only caveat is that they don't work with MacOS X without a $20 driver. There was a freeware OSX Orinoco driver, but it fizzled about 2 years ago. The other problem is that since they were not legal here when popular, you need to get them from outside of Israel. They are legal now, but not popular enough to import commercialy as they only do 11mbit. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
