I just got my new edimax ew-7317ug usb dongle working. (In fact, this post is my first wireless linux email :-) ).
It has Zydas zd1211 chipset, which has a GPL'ed linux driver (dual GPL/MPL in fact) - no firmware needed. Reported to work on 2.4.x & 2.6.6/2.6.7 kernels (I'm using 2.6.10 - but this is my first connection).
This project is new on sourceforge, and although the changelog says there's still major issues (might block usb bus, system lockups in some situations, missing features), it's quite active - and keeps improving.
'Fourse if all else fails, the ndiswrapper's reported to work with this chipset.
From my 10 minutes experience - I can just say it seem to work fine.
( However, get the cvs version. The tarball version is not easy to compile. )
