Yes, it was.
Geoffrey, having some general idea on what the post in question is about, I think you are dead wrong. In a way, it's Sivan's "fault", as he keeps the entity behind the position secret. Still, I believe a bit more caution when passing judgment may have been in order.
But what if it IS a case of 100 identical machines, and a sysadmin group larger than one person?I am looking for system engineer for a site with about 100 Linux machines, both workstations and servers.
Is this for one person to run the whole shop or one of a team of 3 or
4? 100 Linux machines is an awfully lot for one person to run unless
there they are identical and there is NO user support.
Is this anything particular to Sivan's approach, or is that a general observation on today's job market situation?I am looking for a person with strong technical skills, several years of experience (preferably in both system administration and development), and the ability to communicate with users and to respond to their needs and questions. So are a lot of other people. What they get is applications from "script
kiddes" and junior sysadmins.
According to CJI's February salary survey, the average salary for a system administrator is 12,000 (http://www.cji.co.il/cji05sal.txt). Care to explain what you base your data on?Salary for an engineer with suitable qualifications will range between 15,000 and 18,000 shekel per month (at this salary range, an academic degree is highly desirable).
At this salary range all you will get is a "script kidde".
I would considerBut are you a system administrator, or someone who has another skill set who can ACT as a system administrator? I guess this job is not aimed at programmers who want to double as sysadmins. Tough luck. This does not, however, mean it's a bad job, or a bad salary.
it as a "GOOD" (Get Out Of Debt) job if it were in Jerusalem, half time,
and without restrictions on what I do the rest of the time, or unrelatedFull time - most likely. Being as it is that you mention above that it seems like a full time job, you shouldn't be surprised.
IP rights, but I think from the tone of the posting you want a full time
person who will sign that they will do no other work or develop IP outside
of the company.
Signing the IP rights - I doubt. Good of you to assume, though. In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if Sivan refused to negotiate the terms on a public list.
I also would be unlikely to apply for the job as the last company I workedand people who drive badly are bad lovers. Ain't extrapolation a wonderful thing....
for who was cheap on sysadmins was also cheap on software licenses and thought that it was ok for their most important developers to have three
year old machines.
Two questions. No, make that three.(this is a repost, but we were not able to hire people who have applied after the first posting; we are supplying now more information about the position, in the hope that more people will apply :-)
Or in plain English none of the people who wanted the job were qualified.
I have been developing business plans for high tech companies for the
last two years, and IMHO the minimum people needed to support a company
of that size would be 2-3 sysadmins, and if you have an outside web
presence a web admin.
1. You develop business plans. Why do you think you are qualified as a sysadmin for ANY salary? Also, if you got used to the kind of salaries people with the title you boast get, it's no wonder that you find the salary Sivan is offering low.
2. What makes you think they DON'T have a 2-3 sysadmins team?
3. Most importantly, why the frontal attack? Especially since when you and I met professionally, a signed NDA was the very first thing you wanted. There is a proverb in Hebrew which I suspect is relevant here: "הפוסל במומו פוסל". I have no idea how to translate that reasonably.
Geoff.
