any ideas what the problem may be or where to investigate further?

Can't you use the most basic debugging method: printings at strategic
points?

If it were my program - sure. If it's Apache (or, as things seem to indicate, the kernel), then I'm not sure I want to do that right now. Chances are someone already solved this particular problem.

I forgot to mention elsewhere - this is Debian Woody, with 2.4.26. The kernel I'm trying is 2.4.29.
