That still didn't make any difference. Here's the original .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2:

# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit
include "/usr/share/themes/Galaxy/gtk/gtkrc"
include "/home/solomon/.gtkrc.mine"
widget_class "*" style "user-font"

And here's the .gtkrc I created:

style "user-font" {
 fontset =
"-microsoft-tahoma-medium-r-normal-*-*-100-*-*-p-*-viscii1.1-1"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"
# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit
include "/usr/share/themes/Galaxy/gtk/gtkrc"
include "/home/solomon/.gtkrc.mine"

BTW - there are alot of similarly named files on the system in /etc/gtkrc/
and /usr/share/gtkrc/. I looked at them and they had similar content. Here's
a partial list:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] solomon]$ ls -la /etc/gtk
total 164
drwxr-xr-x    2 root root  2088 Dec 20 19:16 ./
drwxr-xr-x  138 root root 10496 Jan 12 23:37 ../
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   271 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.am_ET.utf8
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   598 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.az
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   350 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.az_AZ.utf8
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    12 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.be -> gtkrc.cp1251
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    12 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.bg -> gtkrc.cp1251
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    16 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.bg_BG.iso88595 ->
gtkrc.iso-8859-5
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   338 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.cp1251
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   338 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.cp1255
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    16 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.cs -> gtkrc.iso-8859-2
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    17 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.cy -> gtkrc.iso-8859-14
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   349 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.el_GR.utf8
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    17 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.et -> gtkrc.iso-8859-15
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    17 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.ga -> gtkrc.iso-8859-14
-rw-r--r--    1 root root   198 Aug 25 13:06 gtkrc.he
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    12 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.he_IL.cp1255 ->
gtkrc.cp1255
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    12 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.he_IL.microsoftcp1255 ->
gtkrc.cp1255
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root root    16 Dec 20 02:03 gtkrc.hr -> gtkrc.iso-8859-2

And here's the conent of one (not random) example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] solomon]$ cat  /etc/gtk/gtkrc.he
style "gtk-default-he" {
       fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,\
                  -*-*-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-8,*-r-*"
}
class "GtkWidget" style "gtk-default-he"

Could any of these be connected to the problem?
