Hi, I don't know why, I was not able to reach convexhull from home.I got it the day before yesterday from work and I went through it and skimmed some of the references. It seems that old video cards/monitors did not detect correctly the physical size of the screen, and the procedure described there allows one to tell the system the correect values (I don't have this problem). One can cheat and obtain thus larger-looking fonts, but this has side effects. Actually one can obtain larger-looking fonts without those side effects by chosing a different display mode. As I wrote to the list, my immediate problem is solved. I am left with the question of the usability of proportional true-type fonts in linux: either the cinemascope like term one gets with them is not of concern to some people who recommend their use, or there is some detail one consistently forgets to mention.... I googled intensively without being able to find out the answer.
