No, not as a protocol. But yes, as in "the user experience". That is,
I'd rather not have the user do e.g. ssh from a text console, then
start a session through this. IIRC there were some efforts into
integrating ssh directly into *dm. This would of course help security-
wise, but not with the other things I think are needed.

Me too :-). But why? Is it for something very principal, or simply noone
was interested in this yet?

As I said, I tried it few years ago. It then compressed very well (e.g.
mozilla over dialup was usable), but very uncomfortable (you had to run
various processes on both sides, mostly manually). I did not try it
recently but I know it changed a lot. I hoped that someone here with
experience will share it.
