Update on the Debian Unstable/2.6.8/udev war: 1. DiskOnKey mounts properly on mount point /media/usb0 once I manually fixed /etc/fstab to use /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda. 2. CD-ROM mounts properly on mount point /media/cdrom0 once I manually mkdir /media/cdrom0, which was missing (even though there was a symbolic link from /media/cdrom to it). 3. I was not successful in activating the USB scanner even after editing /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf to locate the microcode for the scanner. The corresponding configuration and microcode files worked under RedHat 8.0. I was not successful in persuading udev to create a /dev/scanner0 or /dev/usb/scanner0 file (there are suitable files in /.dev/usb/). 4. Attempts to use the USB IrDA device failed. 5. I have an USB printer (Epson Stylus CX3200). I didn't try to use it under Debian Unstable, yet.
Google yielded the following documents (which were not helpful for the USB scanner/USB IrDA wars): http://webpages.charter.net/decibelshelp/LinuxHelp_UDEVPrimer.html http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/suriya/kernel_2.6_migration.html http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev-FAQ On Mon, 2004-11-08 at 12:14, Omer Zak wrote: > I am experiencing bad out-of-the-box experience with udev under Debian > Unstable (kernel 2.6.8). > Non-intuitive mount handling for flash memory devices, IrDA not properly > configured, need special tricks to access CD-ROM, etc. > > All the above point at some configuration work, which I was supposed to > do after installing Debian Unstable, but I didn't do. > > 1.
