I just noticed the "Bruce Perens' Open Source Series". It's series of Prentice
Hall books which are released under an "open publication license" a few
months after their publication. They can be freely downloaded and printed
(or read on screen, to save trees) - or, more fairly, used to preview the
book before you go and buy it.

You can see the list of books in
        http://www.phptr.com/promotion/1484?redir=1

One of the interesting books I saw there and downloaded is "C++ GUI
Programming with Qt 3", an introductory book about Qt (3.2) written
by the Trolltech people. Since my intimate knowledge of Xlib, Xt, Motif
and Tcl/Tk are starting to become obsolete, I thought this is one book I
should read :)

Other books you can download on that site are
        * Understanding the Linux Virtual Memory Manager
        * Rapid Application Development with Mozilla
        * The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide
        * Implementing CIFS: The Common Internet File System
        * Managing Linux Systems with Webmin: System Administration and
          Module Development
        * Intrusion Detection with SNORT: Advanced IDS Techniques Using SNORT,
          Apache, MySQL, PHP, and ACID
        * The Linux Development Platform
        * Embedded Software Development with eCos
