Hello Ido, There is a /dev/MAKEDEV which re-creates all device files. I invoked it and it re-created (or at least touched) all device files. But...it did not create /dev/hdc*.
My problem is not with /dev/cdrom but with /dev/hdc. If there were /dev/hdc, then /dev/cdrom would have been OK (I'd create it manually, and /etc/fstab already mentions /dev/cdrom).

I'm working from memory here (haven't done it for over 2 years), there is a "make dev" or something like that...
inside the /dev directory that you should run to create all the devices links... (as I remember there are two ways of creating devices, the first is to create only the one that is in use, and the other -> more popular to create all of them...)
But I never tested it with kernel 2.6 only on kernel 2.4 (when I installed LFS ..).
Please note (at least in my Debian Sid) that /dev/cdrom is only a symlink to the original device.
