I didn't see anybody mentioning it, so:

In case you have such an rpm database corruption, you should not rebuild
your rpmdb before saving a copy of /var/lib/rpm , because rebuilding the
databse may make the information about installed packages permanently
non-available.

You should also try 'rpm -qa -vv' or 'rpm -q -vv xmms' and see if there 
is anything "strange".
