I think that's the reason - different and incompatible modes.

I distinctly remember this in the context of why AMD's 64-bit
implementation is considered superior to Intel's - the 32-bit
support is transparent - sort of a "subset" of the 64-bit opcode
set.

Maybe you'll have some luck learning about this from looking
at compiler support for Intel's 64-bit.
