I got some answers for this problem which did not help and eventually I think I found a solution that I want to share with everybody.
If I did not mention before, I use kdm for login operation. Apparently this mechanism is not exactly the same as xdm and some files are named differently. You can see in the kdmrc file (normally /etc/X11/xdm/kdmrc) that it does not use the files GiveConsole and TakeConsole, it rather uses the same terminology (startup, reset) but uses the files Xstartup and Xreset. In those files you can manage permission for various files when one login so all I did was add the devices /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer into those files similar to /dev/console management.
I hope this information is beneficial.
Bye

Hi,
I think that due to installation of KDE 3.2.1 on RH9 built from source I got this problem with kmix.
When I start kmix I get an error regarding the device /dev/dsp. When looking into it I found that both /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer did not change ownership to my login-id and are owned by root. When manually modifying ownership with chown I grant permission and kmix works fine. When tried to set the setuid bit on kmix I got an error message that it is not allowed.
