At least in Mozilla, there is a problem that may be related. The problem is that mozilla doesn't handle Courier's limitation on number of simultanious connections properly. Try going to Edit/Mail&Newsgroup
I've taken your advise and so far (for about a day) it seems to have helped. I changed the number of concurrent connections from "5" to "3". Both Windows XP and Linux Mozilla Firefox clients seems to response in favour of that.
