You do mean - the VideoLan Server , and not VideoLan Client (VLC), right ?

no, it does not. either choose another client (if Xine or MPlayer work for 
you, why not use them? I personally like their GUI better then VLC's) or 
stream another format (I understand from the above comment that the streaming 
server is under your control) - I highly recommend OGM with Xvid and Ogg.
