I'm not a RH user but shouldn't you better add yourself to the group to which
these devices belong (in /etc/group)? On debian they belong to group "audio"
and so are all the users to which I'd like to grant access to them.
Are you sure you tried the to set uid as the owner of the file or root?

RH handles this differently (and better, IMHO). Users local to the machine are automatically added to this group. I am not sure, however, what mechanism does that. PAM?
