Seems to me to be a bit extreme to solve software bugs using extra 
hardware :-)

I think so, but I wouldn't know as I'm not using VMWare - I'm using Wine. I'm 
not sure but I think wine's OSS module exposes all the soundcards available 
on the system, and the software I'm using (X-Lite) allows me to pick the 
sound card to use and so I'll just have to make sure aRts only uses one sound 
card (and the correct one).

I'd rather leave this option as a last resort as it will involve shutting down 
the computer and some screwing and procrastenating which I'm reluctant to do. 
besides, this is mostly about my workstation at the office and my IT manager 
will kill me :-)
