Hmpf, pet peeve alert. It's modules that do NOT require the kernel sources to be built that are badly written. External modules *must* be built via the kernel's build system, and for that you need the kernel sources. Any other method of building a kernel module is unsafe and bound to bite the builder in the a** - and rightly so...
