I commented out xhost in both my .bashrc and xsession and then I got /etc/gdm/PreSession//Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp /etc/gdm/PreSession//Default: running: sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l :0 gabor (BTW I can Ctr-Alt-F1 and login to the conosol but it is as if I was working in the darkness.) > you can > install xbase-clients. However I fail to see how installing xlibs, which > seemed only to install stuff, is the cause for this error. As far as I understand I was downgrading xlibs so that can make problems. Anyway using aptitude (thanks Ira, it seems to be less brain dead than dselect) I saw that xbase-clients is c (removed but configured). Installing it got me a C (half configured ???) which does not make me entirly happy but at least it conviced the X to let me in. BTW I still get the above two entries in the .xsession-error file. Anyway thanks for the help of both of you. Finally I could install Tk and X works too.
