That's interesting (didn't know Macs used SMB), I thought you would use Appletalk support in Linux. Any reason to prefer SMB over Appletalk?
Appletalk is a noisy protocol and requires a separate network sharing configuration files, Apple also had the habit of changing the specs on pre-X OS's.
OS X supports SMB natively, and there are adding for older version.
