There was some talk about Mandrake (even in 2.4 kernels) already supporting SATA and about 2.6 supporting SATA. Anybody has experience with this? Is all SATA supported or only some chipsets?
Mandrake had support for some SATA controllers since 9 or 9.1, but it usually involved settings the SATA controller to some kind of backward-compatibility mode in the BIOS. Not all controllers were supported, don't know about now (never used Mandrake myself).
My controller, the one on my VIA KT600 board -- VIA 8237 -- is supported on 2.4 since around 2.4.22 or so (I had to patch one myself to actually get it working), and was seamlessly detected by any 2.6 since test8. I'm using it now under Gentoo which never saw a 2.4. It had some minor DMA problems which caused some hiccups in earlier 2.6 version, but it seems that so far the latest 2.6.1-arc got that out of the way too.
