Your desktop environment probably tries to play a sound file as the
"system beep". It's true that KDE uses aRts, but it's possible that
aRts itself is set to use Esound as its output device (see the "Sound
Server" page in KDE's Control Center).

I usually disable all sound alerts in KDE (look at the Control Center)
so that only one central (sound player, Flash...) application would
use the sound device. I must say it's sad that on Linux at 2003
multiplexing multiple sound sources still doesn't work like magic.
(And no, aRts is no solution. Its' lags are inacceptable for
movies/games.)
