Seems strange that esd is started when he's using KDE, is it by some other 
program which uses esd output (e.g: xmms ) ?

arts should be the sound server (if you're using xmms, try using arts output 
plugin as well). if it is, mozilla should be started with artsdsp.

OTOH can lower arts timeout  (I have 3 sec), which will release dsp when idle.
