I recently installed a dual Xeon 2.4 MH (with an old kernel 2.4.18).

The single CPU kernel run MUCH, MUCH slower than the SMP one
(applications took more than double the time it took with 2 CPUs).

Hyper-threading can be enabled (the kernel sees 4 CPUs) or disabled
(only 2 CPUs) by the bios. When enabled, the real saving of CPU
intensive application (I used bash loop) is slight (about 20%).

I found the Hyper-threading really useful when the the application
mix has 2 or 3 CPU intensive processes (like gzip) and some or many
I/O bound applications (the saving is greater than 30%).

Ehud.
