For better sound experience, go back to alsa- unload your oss module and load 
the snd-via82xx or the snd-intel8x0 module.

Anyway, in KDE3.1 it is better to choose auto mode in the sound server setup.

Volume can be changed using KDE's KMix, the Kicker module kmixapplet or the 
venerable aumix.
