Hello,

Sadly, I gave back the IBM Thinkpad T22 my thesis advisor let me keep for two
years. I am on my own now.

I would like to get an IBM Thinkpad T40, which is today's version of the good
old t22.

I used to use the t22 with only Linux but once I upgraded to Mandrake 9
experienced severe problems with the hardware, especially in the sound
department, DVD and hibernation. None of these problems went away.

Although the T22 were sold (only later on) by IBM preloaded with Linux (for the
customers who preferred it) I was not able to get any insights on how to solve
the hardware problems.

Now, before I buy the T40 and bang my head again against the wall I wonder if
there are ways to solving such problems.

1. Did any of you linux gurus ever used a thinkpad and can report how you
managed to setup the hibernation, for example, to work?
2. How many of you have a thinkpad with Linux alone or a Linux co-existing with
the preloaded windows and how?

3. Any advice regarding recommended laptops for linux usage will be welcome. So
far I could not be under the impression that other manufacturers do better than
IBM when it comes to standards and compatibility with Linux. Still, IBM's
support for Linux can be a lot better. In Israel, for example, I could not find
a vendor who actually knew to tell he how complient the hardware is with recent
Linux distributions. Actually, only one vendor knew what Linux is...

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.
