I'm using KDE as well, but with a CPU from an earlier generation, and all of 
my video ram is actually borrowed from the system RAM, yet I don't notice any 
of the artifacts you've described, even if I enable some fancy desktop 
wallpaper.

Before blindly blaming X, I suggest you'll check your configuration, It could 
well be sub-optimized X driver, or perhaps X is not treated well enough by 
the kernel, try renicing it to a negetive value if it's not already, it may 
help on certain cases.

Sure, X is far from being perfect, running a relatively simple application, 
such as kedit, is awfull over adsl/cable while vnc works well even with 
dial-up, but that's a different issue.
