Linux's graphical system is currently the worst considering _any_ alternative, I was just contrasting it with the currently best in order to make a point. > .. (namely, Microsoft Windows) doesn't appear to have those > features at all (at least not last time I looked it it). Actually, it has most of these (namely transulcency and fast redraw) - it doesn't do it in hardware most of the time, but software can be just as good - as you mention later. > Opaque, translucent, or whatever - all can be done in software nowadays so > quickly that users will be none-the-wiser. agreed - and to compete in the desktop market Linux has to do these things, whether in hardware of software , just fast enough so the users will not complain. **it doesn't**. opaque window moving, or even simple redraws take way to much on my not-so-antique Duron 700Mhz. every single non X solution I tried can do any graphics faster then X. Have you ever played around with a OS-X ? that thing is fast, screen shots doesn't do it justice. I'm not saying that we need to compete with it on eye-candy speed (granted, that would be neat) but Linux must compete with the dominant OS in order to get a fool hold in the desktop market and X is dragging it down. It has tons of features which I - as a so-called power user - enjoy, but mean little or nothing to the average jane who just want her accounting program to display faster and not take so much time to redraw. Fact is that everyone, and I do mean everyone - even people who use old Durons and P2s, has some sort of hardware acceleration and its just silly not to use it - except that the X architecture makes it all but impossible. -- Oded ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
