Since I raised this topic, I'll just add that it is very reproducable: I only have to set 'set display_filter=cat' (or whatever) and any message that I see thereafter will produce exactly one unclosed file descriptor. Naturally mutt 1.3 is no longer under development. I saw no such bug report on bugs.deian.org .
