What about the "avarage programmer"? To be a kernel hacker one must first be a programmer, right? Which means you should look at a certain part of the population. Besides, the kernel always stirkes me as not only a meritocracy, but also a place of constant competition, due to the less organized structure and the fame of the LKML.
