What about the "avarage programmer"? To be a kernel hacker one must
first be a programmer, right? Which means you should look at a certain
part of the population.

Besides, the kernel always stirkes me as not only a meritocracy, but
also a place of constant competition, due to the less organized
structure and the fame of the LKML. Maybe some folks would rather
contribute elsewhere.

Yes, and quite a few guys left this list. So? Some people have better
things in life than reading this list. As much as we try to provide them
interesting flames.
