May I please suggest a solution that worked for me in a similar situation
(I have Quantum SWOP-35 mouse).
for redhat 7.3, file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
In the section "InputDevice" replaced line
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
with line
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
and added new option:
Option "Resolution" "300"
