Well, most non involved people don't know what open source is, nor do they know what free software is. They think it's about price, or it's like open systems (this IS what the Sun spin doctor was trying to say there! - it's like Lego - standart intercfaces etc etc) or it's a bunch of manaics or it's a cover for Sun or they don't care. Really. I was trying to make an intro to would explain to *non programmers* what's it all about. In the end, i think it's about software being created by people that resepcts their customers and their customers rights, where this brings on a multitude of wonderful things, like the ability for parralell development. But in the end, if you can't copy the software and get to the source it doesn't happen and I wanted to explain that to people that don't know what source is. If that is too Stallmanish then so be it. As the man said - there is nothing more practical then being an idealist and I was trying to be practical. I guess I'll have to grow a long beared now too :-) > > But I still would have liked to hear more of an overview of where > things have come from, and where they're going -- and why an amuta is > necessary and good. (I happen to think that Hamakor is one of the > best things that has happened to open-source/free software in Israel > for a while, and I have a great deal of respect for the organizers.) The talk wasn't about Hamamkor so I did not see any reason to mention it especially in light of the fact (which Nadav pointed out truthly) that up till now all we managed to do was be dragged in an endless pursuit of legal documents. Still, Hamakor is and was meant to be a "single point or public interface" and it serves this purpose well - we all had something to write on our badges, the press had something to put under out names when quoting. It's not enough, but it's more then we had before in this regard. And, thanks very much for the compliment!
