configure is just a long shell script . It also usually leaves you
config.log with the last program that had problems.

Have a look at config.log and see what was it that configure was trying to
run.

Wait a minute: configure is supposed to create some configuration files on
a successful run. Did it create those files? If it didn't, there are very
good chances you will have all sorts of strange problems...
