But really, in summary - who cares about retribution. Just get a bayesian filter, they work VERY well, they subsume most other related techniques in there (a white list is formed automatically, for example), and it doesn't require much thought.
It's not perfect, so make sure you do go over all spam-marked mail to catch those rare false-positives. BTW, they're even very easy to code. Someone added the one I use to my mail client in a 16K patch. This includes the filter, the GUI changes, persistance for the token lists, everything.
