X grp switching - how do I subtract?

I use setxkbmap -grp:shift_toggle and similar options to add key bindings to switch keyboard layouts. That works, but instead of replacing the previous toggle key, the new one is added to it! Running with -v 10 shows that it grabs whatever current configuration XKB has, and adds to it the command line I issued.

Does anyone know how to remove grp toggle keys without restarting the X server or the current session?
