I have had good results from Systel (http://www.systel.co.il). They have
excellent smart-mode but, alas, no smart-mode Unix support.

When I bought my UPS from them, they were very happy to give me the protocol
specifications. I wrote the smart-mode manager software myself and gave
it to Systel. I have no idea what happened to it there, but _I_ lost
mine in a disk crash quite a while ago (two years at least).

I have no idea whether they are still willing to give out the protocol
but their UPS worked quite well while I used it (it is too much for a
small room I have for my computers).
