Depends upon how you installed VMware. Unless you tell it otherwise, it
installs its own Samba server, in order to allow the virtual machines (if
they run M$ oprating systems) to communicate with the physical computer,
and with each other.
Maybe there was a conflict between VMware's installation and your standard
Samba server's installatoin?
