Hi, I'm answering my own post, since the solution may help someone else. I discovered that iptables refuses to run when ipchains is also active. Disableing ipchains solved the problem. The error messages from iptables were really not helpful. :-( And I didn't find any mention of this in the documentation (although I may have missed it).
