Disk drives draw a lot of power when they spin up (e.g., the Maxtor 80GB can reach 22W on the 12V line plus 2W on the 5V line). I doubt a standard power supply can handle 7 of these simultaneously, so make sure your IDE cards don't cause automatic spin-up. You may also need to tweak your Linux installation, because the kernel's probing of IDE disks may cause them to spin up with insufficient delays.
