Font embedding was DISABLED (by default). I enabled it, and now it works

What distro? What version? What KDE?

How are those fonts configured? Through XF86Config's FontPath ? through
xfs? (usng chkfontpath), through XftConfig? (or fonts.config?)

Have you verified that fonts embedding is not disabled? It should be
enabled by default, IIRC. Check the printing options dialog, or
something similar.
