It's now very late for this discussion, but if there are potential new users who are really worried about data loss, the safest route would be a distro running from the CD (Suse live-eval, DemoLinux, Knoppix etc.). Reset BIOS to boot from CD, reboot and - no risk. It'll run slowly, but it won't compromise existing partitions. But then, any distro running on top of windows will also run slowly, and is hardly a long-term solution for a genuine newbie. Of course, this isn't an *install*, and is perhaps inappropriate for an install party. But it is *safe*.
