I was talking about the another way of ejecting. Not via cdrecord but via
eject (the command "eject". for instance: eject /dev/cdrom).

And from the way you described it (your CDRW started to work again, all
of a sudden), you probably do have some hardware error (maybe some heat
problem?). If it works at x8 (the maximum speed?), then your CDRW might be
a bit old (unless you really insisted on buying a new one in such a low
speed), so such problems (heat problems or "general craziness") can
happen.
