Just to make sure: does this mean that after reboot you were able to
burn CDs? Or does this mean that *everything else* continued to work
fine?

Unlikely. It used to work, right?  Assuming it used to work, have you
by any chance tried a different make of CDs? Also, does it happen at
lower speeds (e.g. 4 instead of 8)?
