Following questions from subscribers, I want to clarify that I asked about APPLET and not APPLICATION. I'm aware that it can't access the client's filesystem, and it is not my intention. The "read" is done against a URL, and the "write" is done against the server (e.g. through a POST request).
Since this is a common need (for example by hosting sites that let their users modify their GIFS on-line), there are many applets that do exactly what I need, but none of them is Open Source, so I can't modify them.
