For a good reason. Many people use off the shelf parts for their servers.

Bad idea. If you're going to use IDE/ATA drives, then go with another chipset. 
Intel is OK.

Why would you want to do that? buy a machine, run the "memtest" program for 24 
hours - if it's all passing ok, then your machine is safe. later if you have 
the urge to replace memory, it will be much cheaper to stick SDRAM into it...
