As a rule of a thumb, from a pure performance point of view, a one year old
Workstation ( originally $15K+ worth) will roughly have a performance of a
high end PC ( $3K- worth), so I would not bother with old Ultra or old Alpha
unless you plan to run Slowaris, Tru64 or HPUX etc...
If you are looking for raw computtion power a cluster might be more adequate.
Linux run best on i386 and it's well optimized for it, not to mention that all
the commercial software is written for that platform only.
If you plan on using Linux I would strongly reccomend the i386 platform (
AMD/Intel etc...).

Bye
