You know, I talked with NetVision support the other day and asked them why they did it ? I mean, why use pptp when all was ok ? And they answered that it is used to control clients uptime. They have those 1$/day account and they must know when you are connected and when you not, so they made it with pptp server instead of accounting app that logs your logins, silly no ?
no, since it also gives you control of users bandwith (for Kazaa, etc) and the option to disconnect user if he/she connected "too long". As you know, disconnections are pretty common with ISP's and since ADSL/Cable is 24/7, you must disconnect users once in a while to preserve bandwith. It's really sad, but we have no choice :-) Oleg. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amir Tal" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Tzafrir Cohen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2002 4:50 PM Subject: Re: [gnubies-il] The CABLES-DHCP-PPTP HOWTO On Thursday 15 August 2002 16:51, Tzafrir Cohen wrote: > On Thu, 15 Aug 2002, Amir Tal wrote: > > the cable companies in Israel changed the method users are connecting to > > them from web-based authentication to pptp. > > i have written a HOWTO explaining how to connect with the new setting. it > > can be found here : > > > > http://whatsup.org.il/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=17 > > The cable companies? > > It is rather a specific ISP to which you through cables. Right? yes. the connections script that invokes pptp checks for the cables internal (10.40.x.x) IP address before dialing. it actually creates a VPN tunnel to the isp using the cables network, much like with ADSL. only with ADSL the tunnel is created to the ISP using a phone line instead of the cables. -- ======================================= Amir Tal Owner, Founder Whatsup, Hebrew Linux Portal Voice: +972-8-9363164 Cell: +972-58-978979 ICQ: 15748705 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: http://www.whatsup.org.il ====================================== ====================== To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
